Automation Projects

Joy Low Seam Longwall Commissioning.
  • Managing, assisting and controlling the activities of AmpControl and Joy as they install a New Low Seam Longwall including Power Distribution.
  • Integration of the Amp Control Citect Project into the site wide SCADA.
  • Creating PLC Communications to collect, display and record all Shearer and Roof support information on the site wide SCADA.
  • Interfacing to a ‘Mailbox PLC’ to provide Corporate Xstrata with performance data.

Refurbishment of the DBT / Eickoff Longwall.
  • During the refurbishment a number of devices were replaced; the new devices utilised different communications protocols and provided a differing set of data, requiring a complete re-write in order to provide the same functionality as previously expected.
  • Design and implementation of a gateway ControlLogix PLC to allow for Ethernet IP Communications with the Eichoff Shearer to provide the PM4 Roof support system with the Shearer position via DF1 Slave Communications and the old PLC5 Sub with water pump running commands.
  • The redesign and implementation of triply redundant communication link between CME, DCB and SUB (Three critical substations required for shearer operation).  This would utilise Ethernet as the Primary with two DH+ Communications channels as the standby. Ethernet was not previously utilised at all.
  • Collections and display of all Shearer Data on the SCADA system (Previously Modbus Communications was utilised with limited information available).
  • Detected, designed and rectified an illegal design flaw in the Shearer Pilot Circuit where an Emergency Stop Device was using the PLC to trip the power outlet rather than hardwired protection.  Fixed and alerted other Mines of the possibility of the same design flaw.

Major Improvements to Citect SCADA System
  • Creation of Analog Display genie to display Process Analyst Popup. (Replacing old Trend Popup).  Many enhancements were also added including:
+ Automatic overlay of device running status and alarm status on the same analog display.
+ Capability to right click on multiple analogs and select ‘add to list’, then display the whole list as a quick/easy way of contrasting various values.
  • Creation of SNMP code to monitor all Managed Switches.

Disaster Recovery Plans and Procedures
  • Offsite backup of all critical systems and databases.
  • Standby PC’s already built ready for critical swapout.
  • Selection of New Hardware to Future Proof the system (Gigabit Managed Switches, Industrial PC’s Capable of meeting UG mine requirements)
  • Procedures for Clean Builds.
  • Standalone system setup in the event of comms loss.

Various Site Support Activities.
  • Migration and recommissioning of Maingate conveyors as they are moved throughout the Mine.
  • Creation of Citect Historian Reports.
  • Creation and Management of SMS notification of events (Production Values, Water Management Usage)
  • Preparation of Major Citect and Historian Upgrade from Citect 6.1 spB to 7.3 and Historian 4.1 to 4.4.
